If you plan to use IBM WebSphere get AE Version 3 beta 2.
Previous versions are not really useful.

I think you should look into cheaper EJB servers such as:
+ VAS www.objectspace.com
+ Ejipt www.valto.com
+ Orion  www.orionserver.com
+ ...

We have experience with VAS and we are happy with it.
