Yes.

Yes. :-) That is, I need to deal with both types of cases. I
understand that if it's just the Role with which the number is
associated, then of course I can get by with a by-value helper object,
but I'm interested more in the first case. I'm leery of a component
model that forces me to refactor my designs in terms of wholly contained
helper objects and am curious about when it is proper and when EJB
forces me to do it against my will.
