I imagine there are a number of good reasons. First, I can
version control an XML file, whereas this is not very optimal
with a ser file. Second, as a human, I can read XML, whereas
ser files are not easy to read (although I getting pretty
close...:). XML files can be opened and edited with XML capable
editors and viewed with common browsers. XML compiled ser lends
itself quite well to make environments. XML can be understood
more easily by non-Java programs. I am sure there are more...
