John -
My experiences with WLS have been very positive. I've been using WLS 451
for about 6 months, and now v5.1 without problems. I think BEA have
received a lot of criticism (a little unfairly I think) for their GUI
tools, but you should be able to work through these. It is certainly
true that there is scope for improvement to make EJB technology easier,
but that is true of all EJB vendors.
Have you worked through the ejb examples which come with the
distribution? How about the weblogic newsgroups? These are very well
supported and you should be able to get answers direct from the
engineers. If it takes a minute to start a server then something is
clearly wrong - I have run WLS on old 233 Pentiums without problem.
As for the infancy question - I would say yes. EJB is very, very
immature, but it is far from impossible to use.
I know this kind of thread is crying out for vendors to reply about
their app servers, so I'll make way... :)
regards,
paul.
