I've used JIntegra (http://www.linar.com/) in a
research and development project which pulled out
Microsoft Word/Excel metadata into a XML/Java process.
This was in 1999 so I'm not sure how much JIntegra has
changed since (I hope it'd have improved!). Didn't
have much problems with it (much to my surprise) so
don't think you will neither.
BTW I didn't use it with EJB.
