We have had problems doing this. We were running the client in a separate
JVM version and ran into a lot of problems. Did not investigate this further
as to the exact reason so cannot give you any further details. But be
careful when treading on this.

Subject: using differenct JVM versions in different tiers

I'm considering having our web tier running JDK 1.4 (to take advantage of
the JAAS classes that have been rolled into that version of the JDK) and
our app server tier running JDK 1.3? Would we still be able to serialize
objects such as Subjects and Principals without any problems? Will there
be larger RMI issues that we'd need to address? Anyone else thinking of
doing this?
  Thanks,
