If the class singleton provides a common service and the intent is to ensure that exactly one such service is available when needed, then an alternative is to register a service MBean with a JMX server. On startup, the application checks whether a service is already registered with the shared JMX MBeanServer. That provides an explicit service management facility using appropriate technology.
