con.ven.tion Pronunciation Key (kn-vnshn)
n.

1)
  a. A formal meeting of members, representatives, or delegates, as of a
political party, fraternal society, profession, or industry.
  b. The body of persons attending such an assembly: called the
convention to order.
2) An agreement between states, sides, or military forces, especially an
international agreement dealing with a specific subject, such as the
treatment of prisoners of war.
3) General agreement on or acceptance of certain practices or attitudes:
By convention, north is at the top of most maps.
4) A practice or procedure widely observed in a group, especially to
facilitate social interaction; a custom: the convention of shaking
hands.
5) A widely used and accepted device or technique, as in drama,
literature, or painting: the theatrical convention of the aside.

>From (3) I could say it's kind of inertial... It's what everybody does.
Of course, you could have a map with south on top(and that way Argentina
would be on top... groovy).

I think it's also because any EJB client will call EITHER on Local or
Remote interfaces. That means if you decide to change from one to the
other, it has been carefully planned so that you're spared of changing
the JNDI names (constants which probably appear once or twice in your
code) but of course you'll have to change all the reference types(all
over the place).... Just kidding.

I wonder how many of the others here follow the convention(in my last
job, it was "ejb/XX<name>EJB" where XX could be E, SL, or SF.
