Acitually, IMHO, the J2EE 1.3 spec is what binds it all together AFIK, EJB 2.0 is part of that spec and EJB 1.1 isn�t, it�s just that WLS 6.1 (sp2) is J2EE compliant maintaining backward compatibility with EJB 1.1 which does not mean that other J2EE technologies *should* be backward compatible if it�s not part of the spec.

After writing this it seems my answer is about as unclear as the spec on the subject ;-)
