Its like FMOD but free, and low level than it.

It can use the hardware capabilities of the sound card (hardware buffer, and 
dma,
internal RAM of the sound card, hardware sound effects).

The problem is than OpenAL seem to shortcut the input device capture, and 
Ekiga is not able to regain it automatically. But It's strange that this device 
cannot be shared ? No ?

Like openGL but for audio.
