Hi Clint, hard to say, just to make sure we are on the same page here is how I did it for search.jboss.org back some time. I think it is still quite up to date. https://community.jboss.org/en/website/blog/2012/09/26/jboss-community-search-upgraded(see the "Adding OpenSearch Support") There is also video in the blog post showing this thing in action (please do not laugh too hard at the narrator voice).
Although the OpenSearch "standard" is IMO a bit dated and not actively maintained it brings fast and easy shortcuts to repetitive searching in the site. I would welcome this on elasticsearch.org/guide (and you would still get most of the metrics if you track any). In fact I think it can be quite easy to add it there (you already have suggester and all that would be needed is to add some xml file into web root and create a new output format of the search suggester to match the opensearch format).
