Yep it's owned by root but that's ok, the places ES needs to write to have
the right permissions.

Why do you want to run ES interactively though? It will log everything to
/var/log/elasticsearch if you need to look at the output. You can use sudo
to run it as the ES user (eg
http://www.cyberciti.biz/open-source/command-line-hacks/linux-run-command-as-different-user/
).
