You don't have to set replicas to 3. It depends on the number of shards you have for your index. If you are using default (5), then you probably have today something like:
Node 1 : 4 shards Node 2 : 3 shards Node 3 : 3 shards Each shard should be around 600mb size (If using all defaults). What are your exact index settings today?
