Just to report that Q5 was the culprit in relation to the lack of side-tone --- borrowed one from further down the build and now able to proceed. That's the last component I'm removing from plated through holes until I get a "Hakko' or something similar --- and it only had three legs!!! --- still it was an excuse to celebrate with several fingers of a nice 'single malt'. My thanks to G3VVT, K4ZM and G0LNE for your support ---a great reflector!
