23. RE: FW: [Elecraft] CW (Ron D'Eau Claire)

When I couldnot find any Vibroplex bugs with slow springs at their store in NY I would generally take a full size(Blue Racers automatically excluded) one aboard my boat and grind the flat spring that connects the weight arm to the paddles. A little circular indentation ground on both sides of the spring would bring down the speed with the two weights relatively near the end of the weight bar. To go fast slide the weight up. To work KPH slide them back down again.

Some bugs seemed to have a natural speed resonance and equally important for ship use was the dash feedback that came into our thumb as most often we would not have anything aboard with which to monitor orselves unlesss we were a lucky boat with 2 HF receivers.

On the LF rig electronic bugs were useless until hv transistors came out as the key up voltage could exceed 500v.That keying relay also limited the speed as it had a large fraction of an inch as spacing. No monitor necessary as the LF rx was a regen.

Ask me if I miss it!
