There are 3 volt lithium rechargeable AA's out there, u just use less cells.
There is a lot of concern about safety reguarding lithium cells but every cell
phone use on now a days. I have never seen an article abt a cell phone
cataching on fire but I guess it probably happens. I have been using
rechargable lithium cell in R/C air planes for several years now and I have
several 4500ma flat cell packs I use with qrp gear. If you use a charger
designed for the cells there should be no issues. Most of the accidents I have
read about were caused by user not using correct charger. A 4500 ma 11 volt
pack weighs a significant amount less that a 8 or 10 cell AA pack. The R/C
battery vendors are claiming a discharge rate up to 20C but with our gear it is
not necessary. Check out any R/C airplane mag and you will find several adds
for these cells. The AA rechargable cells are hard to find and I do not
remember where I found them but I will try and find the invoice if others are
interested. Tim ORourtke W4YN
