Lew, most of us have a noise generator that will reach 432 MHz, even though we might not want it. I bet you do too, e.g. a nasty "wall wart" with a switching supply or perhaps your pc itself (especially around the mouse and keyboard ports). Try putting a loop of insulated wire hooked to the antenna input near those units and see if you don't hear a rise in background noise.
The level of the signal or noise you use isn't important as long as it's not too strong. Also, if there are any on-air signals or birdies from some piece of equipment, you can use one of those as long as it is being picked up via the antenna connector. If your "junque box" has a decent bunch of parts, you can cobble up your own noise generator. Here's one I built: http://www.n0ss.net/noise_generator_ac7ac-style.pdf Wired with short leads as shown, it produces plenty of noise up through 450 MHz. I have a very loving and understanding XYL. For Christmas, she gave me a 432 mHz Elecraft transverter kit. I already have the internal 2 meter transverter in my K3, so this increases my available bands for VHF/UHF contests by 50% (from two to three). Now I just have to get the kit assembled, aligned and field-tested before the January VHF-UHF Sweepstakes (Jan 21 weekend). Shouldn't be a problem, given the relative non-complexity of the kit. One question for the group: I don't own a UHF-capable noise generator. Is there an alternative means available to adjust alignment? I'm getting sooo tired of having to tell other contesters that I only have 2 and 6 meters available! That's about to change. Next up: 222 transverter!
