Coming late to this thread - 

Phil, don't use the preamp. You do not need it.  Open up the mic base and wire 
around it.  It can be a source of RFI.  My MIC level is 29, the impedance 
switch on the mic is at 500 ohms, and I get good audio reports on my MC-60A.  
The up/down buttons are useful on occasion.
