What I do if I let the smoke out of a trace is to replace the burned portion of 
the trace with a SINGLE strand from some braided wire. In effect, reapiring the 
burned trace with a fuse.

And don't do this again because now that the melted trace has been replaced
with a wire, which can likely handle more current, you'll break something
else farther down the chain.  :-\
