And of course the KX3's current drain in receive mode is far lower.  
With backlight off it's as low as ~120 mA. Your batteries should last  
a lot longer.

It would definitely have to be very clean, which probably means not  
just well-regulated but also shielded. Switching regulators can be  
notoriously noisy on both RX and TX.
