Kevin, thanks for posting Paul Harden's comment on solar flares. If you Google Heliotown you will find recordings of the sudden but relatively short lived increase in background noise as heard on some HF bands as the result of a solar flare.
During the events which I have heard on 15m, 10m and 6m, the increased noise sounded like a pronounced hiss lasting for about 2 - 3 minutes.
