Yep, Fred. During my music career a mic's "proximity effect" (close talk) was
perfect to enhance a vocal with that special Big Bopper or Elvis bottom end.
And, think Righteous Brothers too....."You never close your eyes......" rattled
the walls. Sure 55's and SM-58's were ideal for that. And if you ever saw
George Carlin live........the proximity effect was his trademark accent to any
point he wanted to drive home.

Ah, the good old days.

This unwanted effect is largely avoided by using a communications mic correctly
- speaking *across* the front of it, not into it. A boom mic that will reach
the front of your face should be positioned *below* your mouth.
Note that most newer boom mics stop short of the mouth. That automatically
ensures you won't talk into it.

While in college, I had a job for awhile at KPFA [FM] in Berkeley CA.
They had one of those old RCA "velocity" mics [the sort of prismatic-shaped
ones, fairly big] on the control board and one of my shifts was to sign the
station on the air at 0600. I discovered that, if I crawled right up to the
mic while reading the sign-on script, I could sound like Johnny Cash instead of
a 17 year old. The effect was striking. I think it's true of most mics, this
one was just extreme...
