I think the versatility of the KX3 is its best-selling point. It can work as a complete base station radio with or without the 100 watt amp. It can be used in the car with its own batteries or connected to the car power jack (with both + and - fused). It can be used while taking a walk or taking a vacation. It can be thrown into a briefcase when you go on a business trip. It can be taken with you to a nursing home or to an assisted living facility. It can be taken to Field Day and run off solar power. It can be taken with you while you're waiting in the car for your wife to do her shopping - how long does that take? It can be used in all these situations and more yet not sacrifice any features you may want or need at any time. You may not be able to have an antenna to transmit in all these cases but you can always connect a length of wire and listen. Many hams have multiple radios for different purposes, but most of us can't afford to do that. So for those who can only afford one radio and so needs it to serve them in many different ways, the KX3 would seem to be just the radio they need to have.
