Trevor,

A covered bridge is a wooden structure built across a river or creek with a roof and enclosed and/or partially enclosed sides used to give protection from the elements, usually snow or ice. These were fairly common here in Waterloo County during the 18 hundreds, built by the Amish and Mennonites who settled in this area and in Pennsylvania and the Eastern States in the USA. There are still a few left and in daily use in this Ontario County. We live in "Mennonite" country here in Waterloo Region where the farmers of that sect still farm in the old ways using horses to haul their equipment and buggies on the roads. They still stooke the grain by hand. Their houses do not connect to the hydro (electricity) grid, although they often generate their own electricity using gasoline or diesel generators.
