I presume Kevin is referring to Oracle VirtualBox. If that is the case, I have to report that I was unable to run FLDIGI under Ubuntu 11.10 in the VM because it would not properly communicate with a PCI board slotted into my MoBo to provide serial I/O. I moved the Linux to a separate hard drive in a dual-boot configuration, and in this instance it runs perfectly well. I was not able to pinpoint the source of difficulty with Ubuntu running in the VM vis-a-vis FLDIGI, although otherwise it was perfectly satisfactory.
