Thanks Don! All that tried already, should have mentioned it, too, sorry. 
Dick, K6KR, already contected me and suggest the only way to be really sure 
there's no hardware problem (i.e. some defective cells in the EEPROM chip) 
is to do an EEINIT. Will do that next week when back from "radio holiday" 
and not needing the radio daily as it is right now.
