I am really not surprised.
Anything "Apple" has been "apple-centric" since day one.

I recall modifying standard 3.5 inch floppy drives so they would work 
with the Apple II computers.

Apple does a lot of "strange stuff" to maintain its differences. That is 
why I will not buy Apple - it "sucks you in" with a bargain and easy 
usability,  but then tells you that everything "Apple" is proprietary 
and will cost you an extra bundle of money.
