Bill, I would never recommend that someone not yet intimately familiar with the K2 attempt to start on a partially assembled kit unless the skill level of the original builder is known and the reason it is incomplete is also known. A partially built K2 from the estate of a builder whose skills are known should be OK, but all others are suspect.
It is hard enough picking up the pieces where someone else stopped building, but you must also ask "Why did he stop building?" In most cases it is because the original builder encountered problems and was unable to resolve them. I have a LOT of experience with the K2, and I recently had a customer who had started a K2 back in 2001 and ran into problems - it sat on the shelf. Then in 2005 he ordered another and had problems again and that too sat on thee shelf. I have repaired and completed the later one he purchased, and am still working on the first one trying to solve the (hopefully) last elusive problem. Trying to find someone else's build problem is not a trivial task. Start with a new kit - Elecraft is still shipping them - and he will receive a 1 year parts warranty. Of course, Elecraft technical support is always available no matter the age of the K2. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/4/2012 4:33 PM, Bill Robbins wrote: > I have a friend that wants to get back into ham radio.
