Jim, the KXBC3 looks like the battery retainer and replaces it.

On page 8, where the instructions says, "Place the KXBC3 module back in its
ESD-safe bag until needed later", at that point you have prepared the KXBC3
module for installation but you have *not* installed it.

Next you remove the battery retainer (Figure 3). Note that the caption on
Figure 3 is "Removing the Battery Retainer" (not Removing the KXBC3 module).

Once you have the battery retainer out the rest of the procedure is about
installing the KXBC3 module in its place.

The clock needs power to run. If you don't have external power connected you
*must* have batteries installed. The clock will run for up to 5 minutes
without batteries (so you can change batteries without having to reset the
clock), but after that everything dies.

The warnings were about Alkaline batteries, not the NiMH batteries you'd
install to use with the KXBC3.

Subject: [Elecraft] Fwd: KX3's KXBC3 NiMH Battery Charger & RT Clock!

*Howdy, Folks.*
**
*My KX3-K is S/N 2917. I've got the KXBC3 kit installed. [I just got my
KX3 on the air last night and made my 1st QSO tonight. WOW! what a GREAT
little rig.] I've set the clock several times & every time I turn my KX3
back on, it starts over from "zero" time. That's what my question is all
about & I've waited 5 +/- minutes between cycling.*
**
*According to the installation instructions for this kit, I assembled
Battery Retainer & Shield per Page 8, Fig. 2. and "fit-checked" it. Then on
Page 9, Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 it says to remove this assembly and "set it
aside". [I've got this assembly currently installed & with my KX3's case
closed.]*
**
*Do I leave it installed or do I remove it while I operate on an external
power supply? [I don't plan on installing any batteries at this time
because of all the horror stories about battery leakage.] When I look at
the Menu , it says I don't have this kit "not inst". I've complied with the
4th bullet on Page 12.*
**
*If I remove this assembly, will my clock then stay "set"? Or will I always
have to be set my clock every time I turn my KX3 on? Do I leave it in or do
I remove it?*
**
*Thanks for ANY help.*
**
*Best 72 & 73.*
*Jim.............*
