I checked in to the ECN today. Interesting! I will be checking in on a
weekly basis. CW speed was a little fast for me, but it gives me practice
to copy at higher speeds. My keying was not good today (some days I can't
send CW for my life) so I commend NCS for copying me.

Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for October 9th, 2005

Good Evening All,
First off: Happy Thanksgiving to all you folks North of the Border! I
was listening to the Aurora Net based out of Abbotsford, British Columbia,
Canada a few days ago. They were happy to have me QNI from Oregon cross
mode on the KX1 I've been loaned. Worked quite well but they did require
a relay. Not sure if it was me or if it was the NCS not catching my fist
but all was well after the relay. They wished me a Happy Thanksgiving
too. Very friendly group those Canadians in 4, 5, 6 and 7 lands ;) I
listened on the KX1 for almost an hour until they finished up. Then I
moved on to another contact with the KX1 until Patricia came home. I did
experience a bit of difficulty with the Elecraft paddle unit starting to
work itself loose. Made sending a little more interesting than
necessary. Any hints? I plugged my Code Warrior paddles in to finish the
QSO then went to dinner.
Tonight I was a few minutes late for the beginning of the net due to
the party for our local 90 year old. I turned on the rig and took off my
coat only to have Mr. Hammond call me. I asked if he could call the net
as I found my reading glasses and followed along. It is pretty tough for
me to see the radio or the paper with the glasses which I use to drive!
Getting old and my eyes are changing fast. Astigmatism and far
sightedness means I can't see with them or without them! But with a
series of lenses I seem to get along fine. Especially on the computer at
a fixed distance. Soldering is most annoying!
The propagation was pretty good on this end but I did have a few folks
mention QSB. Poor Roger was having problems with his paddles so his call
sign came out as variations on a theme ;) The weakest station to check in
today was Ray from North Carolina. His antenna choices are not as good as
the ones he has at home so I had to dig a bit deeper. The slant four at
the end kept coming out as FV. But I finally got enough K2HY to figure
out who it was. Lastly I got Bruce, W0QQS, in MN who is bravely holding
Winter at bay. He told me it is in ND now so Ken should be a bit chilly.
However Ken is one who sits in the live nativity scenes and laughs at the
snow ;) What a collection we all make! Thanks for the fun, guys! Gary
thinks we may be doing something right. He wrote me a note two weeks ago
when I mentioned the wall of sound in response to my first true CQ. I
listen to other nets and try to emulate their bonhomie. Seems to have
made a difference.

At 2303z (sorry for being late guys) on 14050.36 kHz (the difference
between Tom's and mine):
N0SS - Tom - MO - K2 - 008
W1TF - Ty - GA - K1 - 1423 QNI #10!
VE1RGB - Gary - NS - K2 - 2519
K1EV - Bill - CT - K2 - 2152 QNI #55!!
N7NLU - Karl - OR - K2 - 4227 FB sig Karl considering you are over the
ridge from me ;)
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K2 - 1031
K3IDX - Roger - KX1 - 416
AK2B - Tom - NY - K2 - 4482 Also a fine signal into OR
K4BEH - Pat - GA - his K2 #5061 is still a work in progress. Good luck on
the build!
K2HYD/4 - Ray - NC - KX1 - 608
KJ7BS - Mark - AZ - K2 - 439
W0QQS - Bruce - MN - K2 - 3646

Thank you again for a job well done Mr. Hammond. Without you in the
middle of the country my job becomes more difficult. Today we had great
propagation in stark contrast to last week where it was tough to get
Indiana and Forest Grove, Oregon on the list. As ever if there are any
errors in the above listing please write with your corrections.
    73 all,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)
