I did the same thing, but used a leather punch to make the shaft hole, easy.

I needed one some time ago for a similar use to dampen a knob on another rig.   
 I simply raided my XYLs sewing supplies  found some felt and a pair of 
scissors   it wasn't perfect but did the job just fine  and since its hidden 
behind the knob who cares that I cant cut a perfect circle.
