Hmmm... I had not considered aurora, a real possibility. When I heard
the "rough" CW signals, it was late in the contest, around 7PM or so
EDST.

Geomagnetic storm that happened just prior to the start of the
contest. Visible Aurora was actually seen as far south as Kansas!
