No, with two minor exceptions. The first is QRP. Last I looked, the KAT500 does not sense frequency or autotune with only 5W drive. The KAT3 does. Second, adding the tuner gives you a second switched output from the K3, which yields a nice compact package for FD and other travel . IMO, not a good enough reason to buy the KAT3 unless you're really flush. :)
