Phil - It is probably unusual to get a full 5 watts out of a KX1 even with a 12V or slightly better power supply. You might get pretty close if everything is perfect, but I'm happy to see 3 watts on mine.
Of course, its alway amazing what you can accomplish with only 1 or 2 watts!
