Number 4 under OPERATION/TRANSMITTING on page 11, "When driving the KPA500 with an Elecraft K3, use the K3's per-band power control to set the amplifier output just below the desired peak output on each band."
That requires that you use the AUX to ACC cable between the K3 and the KPA500 as shown under K3 ENHANCED CABLING on page 24. You aren't the first to miss it.
