Hi Jim ! It's generally accepted convention today that virtually all key plugs/jacks are "three-circuit" ... tip, ring and sleeve ... in both "1/8" and "1/4" diameters.
IMHO, modifying software to satisfy the wants of a few of us isn't warranted. In your case, "doing it right" is just a simple plug change and the key would still work in "older" radios. 73!
