Gary,

Early KX3s had nuts on the encoder shafts which made the switch action intermittent at times because the nuts interfered with full travel when the knob was tapped. So check for nuts on your encoder shafts - if present, remove them - they are not needed.

You should be able to do this by tapping the Keyer/Mic knob and this is working here on the bench this morning, however, in the field sometimes this does not seem to work and I end-up stuck in CMP/ALC mode. It might be finger trouble on my end but this has happened several times.
