Looks like this was because volume turned up too high. 
I have tended at times to run RF GAIN backed off quite a bit thus requiring a 
hefty amount of volume of about 2 o'clock. I would then adjust RF Gain to the 
level of volume I wanted. 

It looks like some stations were strong enough to overcome RF Gain enough to 
distort with that amount of volume. 
So I'll have to alter my style in group QSO's with noise.
