A dipole cut for the band is certainly best, but in a pinch, compromise 
antennas will still allow you to make a few contacts. I've checked into 40 
meter nets many times running 3 watts (SSB) into a 25' sloping wire tossed into 
a tree, or 10 W mobile into a 52" center-loaded whip.
