Over the past four months, many new and existing K2 owners have
benefited from the Rework Eliminators(TM) un-module accessory kit (A.K.A.
"unpcbs") which Ken and I introduced this past summer. As described on
our website, the use of this kit can dramatically simplify the later
installation of the K2's five PCB mounted internal options.

For those of you who are new to the Elecraft family and anticipating
building your very first K2 this holiday season, Ken and I encourage you
to consider getting this kit for yourself. (One of our customers suggests
that it would make the perfect holiday stocking stuffer.) Even if you
will be using a builder-for-hire (and especially if your K2 will be
starting out as a bare bones unit) do yourself a favor and request that
your builder incorporate our Rework Eliminator(TM) option bypass headers
into its construction.

As promised, we will be releasing our "Companion Guide" later this
month as a free PDF download from our website. This supplement to our
User's Guide explains how to build a new K2 just like Ken's "plug & play
ready" #5048. It also addresses upgrading an existing bare K2 to produce
the same result. Here's a link to a nice high res image of #5048...
http://www.arkayengravers.com/elecraft/UNMOD/IMAGES/K2Image2.jpg If you
look closely you'll notice that it already has the five mounting posts.

For an added cost of about $22.98 for the duplicate spare parts (less
if you're getting some options up front), all five PCB mounted options can
be installed in a new bare K2 without having to disassemble it or rework
its PCBs. Just pop the lid, plug in the option, and add the securing
screw and lock washer. Likewise, even the lid mounted options can be
installed without additional K2 PCB soldering.

Although this may not seem like it's worth an extra $22.98, the
alternative is possibly having to disassembly your K2 six or seven times
should you choose to add the options one at a time! By following our
suggestion, other than to reconfigure the mic header on the front panel or
incorporate mods into an older K2, there would be no need to disassemble
your radio to upgrade it.
