It seems to me that using the two smaller packs would have some advantages for 
your application.  They would each be able to power both the KX-3 and the 
amplifier, just for about half the time of the single larger battery.  So you 
would have to switch over to the other battery at some point.   But using two 
does offer redundancy in the event of a battery failure.   Also, dividing the 
weight into two chunks may be advantageous for the folks who are humping them 
up the mountain.
