Hi everyone,
After the recent discussions on linear vs switching vs battery power
supplies, I decided to try a switching supply. The ones I'd been
using before, the ones that had been giving me problems, were all
linears.
I do like the idea of running on battery all the time, and I do have
a big deep-cycle battery. However, the K2 is going to be installed
in my bedroom and I'm not sure I like the idea of basicaly storing 30
pounds of lead and sulfuric acid under my bed. So the battery will
stay with my VHF/UHF gear. (My whole house is my ham-shack; VHF &
UHF in the living room, 10M beacon in the studio, HF in the bedroom.)
Anyhow, I happened to have a power supply from a laptop that was no
longer used, it runs 15vdc regulated, and up to 2.5A. I lopped off
the proprietary connector and added the plug that came with the K2,
and it works great! No 'buzzing' in the received CW, and I've tested
it on transmit up to 10 watts (into a dummy load) and I only draw
about 2.1 amps at 10 watts so the PS should be ok. It's small and
light too, only about 5 x 2 x 3/4 inches. It's from a Toshiba laptop.
Thanks to everyone who mentioned ex-laptop supplies; without this
list I never would have even thought to test that old supply with the
K2. I'd have probably ended up spending $$$ on something I didn't need.
