Here's an idea to consider -- when I built mine I made the shelf out of 3/4" plywood with 1 x 4's attached to the front and back of the shelf. Screws and glue. This makes the actual thickness of the shelf about 3-1/2", but makes it strong enough that you don't need vertical supports except at the ends. Vertical supports always seem to be in the wrong places!
