I use the canned stuff on noisy potentiometers where I give them a shot through one of the openings.
On any contacts, I have a 2 oz bottle with a needle applicator that puts exactly what I want where I want it. That might not make as big a difference on newer equipment, but I was always told it was a good idea around phenolic tube sockets.
