I recall that CQ magazine had a "Save 11" contest, which stirred up a bit more activity on the band, but it didn't save it.

My boat anchor Collins 75A3 receiver and Johnson Ranger transmitter have 11
     meters on them. Before 1958, 11 meters was shunned by hams in favor of 10
     meters. Little surprise the FCC repurposed it.
