I have sent Mr. COLEMAN, N2BC, several emails over the past couple of years with regard to K3-EZ. To which I received no responses. His QRZ page is still up. I fear he is either no longer interested in amateur radio, incapacitated in some fashion, or become a silent key.

Can EQ, or any other menu settings, degrade or change over time?

I ask, as I keep careful logs of ALL menu settings and have noted some
changes showing up from time to time. Currently, I make my settings
manually.

Too bad no one ever picked up the now defunct K3 EZ. Now there was a
program that really served a purpose.

I have a (high quality=$50 or so) antistatic mat on my desk. Slower
discharge. No issues with sparks in the winter. It makes a nice surface as
well.

We have a whole house humidifier.
The default setting is 40%. We run it just up to the point where we
start to get condensation on windows then back off about 5%. It only
runs during winter.

I make it a point to touch the metal side of the computer before anything

A couple other recommendations would be to buy a cheap digital humidity
indicator and put one or more humidifiers* around the house.

I'm not sure what is the ideal humidity level, but our house here in
Virginia it would get down under 30% which results in lots of sparks AND
split fingers.

I try to get it nearer to 50% which seems to help both those conditions.

*I don't recommend the old fashioned steam units which simply have two
electrodes immersed in water such that the steam is created from the
electric current between them. Obviously, pure laboratory H2O won't work,
but a pinch of salt in the water makes the house lights dim (HI), neither of
which is a desirable situation. I don't like the ultrasonic units either
because for some reason, they caused a lot of dust to be deposited on our
flat screen TV. My opinion is that the best types are the ones that use a
wick element and fan to put moisture in the air.

To prevent static discharge problems with my computers, I have a bare ground
wire attached to the side of my desk. I touch it when I first sit down. In
the winter, it does draw a spark. Most computers are not well designed or
protected.

That said, I had no idea the K3 was susceptible to ESD - via the K-Pod.

Hello Group,

I am looking for some feedback from those using magnetic loop antennas with
the current band conditions. I use dipoles or end fed random wires when I
am in the field with my KX3. When I am at my home, I use a horizontal loop
that is a close to a full wavelength on 80, and a 10-15-20 meter beam. In
the field I a running max 15w with my KX3 and at home 100W with my KXPA100.

I know that mag loops are not as efficient as a dipole and will never
receive or transmit as well because of their compact size as my field
antennas. I have been toying with the idea of building/buying one for times
when I need a compact antenna for 40-10 meters.

When I have looked at YouTube videos of folks using magnetic loops, they are
all from a time when band conditions were far better than they are now.

Can any of you current magnetic loop antenna users in the group tell me how
they are performing now and what is a realistic expectation as the cycle
continues to drop. I should also say that I am almost exclusively a CW
operator. I can envision using a mag loop from hotel rooms or other travel
times when I can't get a long wire or a dipole in a tree.

Thanks,

Terry, N7TB

All the antennas you say you use are E-field antennas, they couple to
the E-component of the EM wave [which includes your horizontal loop].
Mag loops couple to the H-component. Away from the antenna [far-field],
the EM-wave has both E and H components orthogonal to each other, and it
doesn't matter how the wave was launched.

Antenna efficiency is complex. E-field antennas are strongly affected
by surroundings, imbalance, and the like because objects in their
environment have varying conductivities which contributes to their
inefficiencies. Mag loops are mostly insensitive to surroundings
because most of the objects [including me sitting under my Alexloop]
exhibit a permeability of 1.0 or very close [ferromagnetic metal
buildings, towers, and railroad tracks excepted].

The radiation resistance of most E-field antennas that hams use is
fairly high compared to the loss resistance in the wires. Radiation
resistance for mag loops is very low, usually measured in the milliohm
range, and in the general range of the loss resistance in the loop
conductor. Thus, loop resistance is a major factor in efficiency or the
lack of it.

In QRP field settings, my Alexloop [H-field] regularly outperforms the
E-field Buddipole I had in all the configurations I tried for the BP.
The resonant loop has a very high Q and suffers from very narrow
bandwidth [4-10 KHz depending on the band] and must be very carefully
adjusted after each QSY. On balance, my loop is quieter than the
end-fed I also use outside and it has a pronounced null orthogonal to
the loop plane which can be useful. The KAT2 takes care of matching the
end-fed, it's bypassed for the loop and tuning is critical.

As always, life is a series of trade-offs. I have not found any
correlation between the solar cycle and antenna choice. [:-)

You mentioned a KXPA100: Beware, mag loops exhibit some surprisingly
high voltages and circulating currents, even at 10-15 W. There's a
nifty calculator at

www.66pacific.com/calculators/small_tx_loop_calc.aspx

1) This Windows 7 64-bit computer cannot auotmatically find a Driver for
the USB cable. I'm, quite sure my old W.7 computer installed the driver
automatically without me downloading it manually.

2) Since the new computer cannot find the driver automatically, from the
Elecraft website, I downloaded the Driver file: "CDM v2.12.24 WHQL
Certified" and then unzipped it to the Documents folder. (there are 8 files within
that folder)

Using Device Manager, I try to install the new Driver, but regardless
where I place the zipped or unzipped "CDM v2.12.24 WHQL Certified" driver file,
Device Manager reports that it "cannot find the driver".

Please advise what I'm doing wrong? Such as, it there on particular file
I need to select manually? Or perhaps this CDM v2.12.24 driver file needs
to be placed in a particular folder?

Thanks & 73,

WRT WG0AT?s video https://youtu.be/HkeZhnJo1g4 <https://youtu.be/HkeZhnJo1g4> that Wayne Burdick just put on the group net, It looks like the ubiquitis and handy BNC to banana plug adapter with a miniature single sided UNUN to the antenna and ground. I know there is no such thing, but the video only gave a peek. All I know is that it is small, it looks like it has a minimalist matching
thingis and it works.
If Steve or any other good fellow could tell us what it is, I would be interested. Mine always become more bigger and more complicated.

I can't "advise what you're doing wrong," but ...

Has Windows assigned two USB connections to the same COM port? You can
tell in device mangler. That's happened to me and I've had to go in and
change one of the ports to an unused one. This never happened to me
under XP. Apparently, Windows' USB IQ is inversely proportional to
Windows version #. [:-)

Is there a template for configuring N1MM+ to use with a K3s so that I
can record TX audio on the fly using the Function keys?

Asking for a friend as I don't (yet) own a K3s, but I know his has
direct USB connection to the PC so I'm not sure where to start in
configuring N1MM+ and the K3s.

Sorry, this ended up being quite long winded! I'm currently building one from a Russian Vacuum Variable Cap from ebay. Pure DC resistance is the biggest challenge as I see it. Even little additional resistance just turns into useless heat in the loop so R needs to be as low as possible. The MFJ mag loop helps in that dept by welding the loop to the variable cap. Since that is out of reach I am going to use one solid piece of copper pipe bent into a circle and then a length of 1" solid copper strap will be soldered to each pipe end and wrap around the ends of the vacuum cap. I figure once a year I should disassemble the copper/vacuum cap connection and clean any oxidation off. I found 6cm aluminum automotive fuel pump mounts on ebay that fit onto the ends of the vacuum caps perfectly providing a mount and allowing the copper strap connection to take place. Email me directly if you are going the vacuum cap route and want to see how I'm doing it. There are two lessons I have lea rned so far: 1). That Russian vacuum caps are way heaver then I thought. 2): The screw device needs more torque then I originally anticipated. The weight factor just needs to be addressed with a beefier mount. Since it will reside at the top of the loop it will have a high center of gravity and I don't want the wind to knock over a >$200 glass cap! The torque issue just means I need a stronger NEMA17 stepping motor and a 2 amp easy driver board to give it extra current. I imagine when it is cold the grease will stiffen up requiring even more torque. It may come to pass that I will use a gear reduction stepper motor to get the torque I need. I'm tending to figure out the little problems as they crop up! I'm building this one for 100 watt operation as the vacuum cap should be able to handle the voltage. For QRP operation I have found a 2Kv air variable on ebay that (according to the 99pacific calculator) should handle the 10 watt KX2 for portable operation. I'm already startin g rev.2 and I haven't even finished the first one yet! Anyway I'm having a hard time finding someone to bend the copper pipe. It takes a rolling tube bender and I don't want to invest $150 at Harbor Freight to use it a few times! Most local garages can't bend 1" pipe. Too small. I need to find a fabrication shop. I could use soft copper and try to make a good circle but I'm a little too OCD for that! Well that's about all I can say so far. I'm sure I'll have more advice as I finally get this thing actually working!?

Dick,

Since Windows cannot automatically find the new driver file, when you
get to the window that asks 'How do you want to search for driver
software', click "Browse my computer for driver software".

In the window that opens, click the 'Browse' button and navigate to
where you have placed the unzipped file. Windows should then load that
file.

Try muffler repair shops. I think most new ones get the pipe pre-formed
from the suppliers, but an older one might have the equipment to do it.
Or, make it octagonal with soldered fittings, there really is no
discernible difference.

An 18 ft circumference loop with 1" copper pipe will be about 50%
efficient on 40, with a BW of ~5-6 KHz [Q is about 1,000]. That's close
to as small as you'd want for 40, just outside the upper limit for 20
and it will transition to an E-field antenna above 14 MHz, basically it
becomes "an elevated conductor." About 5KV across the capacitor @ 100
W, resonant current will be a bit north of 20 A.

The RF loss-resistance of the pipe will be higher than the DC resistance
since the RF sees only the outside surface of the pipe. I'd look into
some way of getting that cap to the bottom of the loop. On a 5 ft
tripod, the top will be close to 11 ft in the air with a big
"falling-over moment" in the wind.

The output of my K3 (SN 4657) has suddenly dropped 10-15 W on 15 meters,
from about 100 W to 85-90. The other bands haven't changed, nor has the
supply voltage (13.6 V at full power). Restoring to a previous
configuration does not help. I had a similar problem early on, also on
15, and had to ship the K3 back to Elecraft, who replaced the 10 W
module, but not the KPA3. 15 seems to be a problematic band. Has
anyone else seen a problem like this?

Fellow Elecrafters,
I am trying to do some Digital modes but using the
computer/Software

I am running a MacMini, with K3-S. Software is a Fldigi (3.23-13 latest as of today).

Wiring - 1 USB cable from K3-S to MacMini.
I am using the RIGCat interface.
Configure->Sound Card -> Audio is set to USB Audio Codec (See below for device confirmation)
K3-A is in DATA-A mode.

PTT-KEY is set to OFF-OFF (mentioned in the k3.xml right file)

        QSY Works
        Mode Works
RX Works - nice decoding on the Computer screen

But no TX Output. The K3-S red TX light is on - but nothing ?.

As I have decoding on the Screen I am presuming that the USB cable is receiving Audio from the K3 correctly.

The output from system_profiler SPAudioDataType yields sensible data?. specifically

My 2014 purchased K3 is 20-25 watts low on 14mhz but all other bands are good. ....just haven't worried about it as I normally use 50 watts or less to drive an amplifier. I'll look into it after ARRL DX CW in February, so long as it doesn't get worse.

Tim,

Do you have *anything* plugged into the LINE IN jack on the K3S? If so,
that overrides audio from the internal CODEC.

I don't know Apple, but I do know the K3. Go to your computer's
soundcard gain and set the slider for the soundcard output to about 2/3
of maximum.
THEN - during the Fldigi transmit, set the K3S LINE IN level to produce
4 bars solid with the 5th bar flickering on the ALC meter. That is the
proper drive level. Note that for the K3/K3S, this is the NO ALC point.
Adjust the desired power with the power knob. Ignore the internet
advice to use the audio level to adjust the power - the K3/K3S is
different than most transceivers in its power control mechanism.

BTW, you can do those transmit adustments with the K3/K3S in TX TEST
mode so no RF is generated - keep the airways clean of "tuneup signals".

Just got a KX2 last week and so far I'm loving it! It's a technological marvel!

I did notice one small thing that irks me though. That is, if I use vox to transmit (I have the vox delay set to 0.5s) and find I want to end the transmission quickly by pressing the manual XMIT button on the rig, the button push is ignored by the rig's firmware. Transmission only ends when the vox times out.

The vox seems to have a higher priority in the firmware. This could cause a problem when, for example, you are operating the rig in a noisy environment. It's theoretically possible, given enough noise, that the rig could get stuck on transmit forever (or at least until you pull the power or mic cable!).

Might I suggest (in a future version of the firmware) reversing the vox and PTT precedence in the firmware, so that I can end a vox-started transmission at any time by pressing the XMIT key on the rig?

Hi Terry - I have two loops: the MFJ 1788 (40-15 meters) and the Ciro
Mazzoni Midi loop (80-20 meters).

I use the MFJ portable, on a MFJ tripod, and it works well, but better to
answer someone's CQ than trying to call. The downside is it is limited to
places you can drive up to - it is pretty heavy for its small size.
Interestingly, I use it on 40 meters, where I seem to do better than on the
higher bands. I used this loop extensively during the last low cycle,
2008-2010, and checked into a 40 meter net every Sunday with good results
most of the time. The stations were located all over the state.

The Midi is for permanent operation. It weighs 40 pounds, the loop is made
of 3" diameter thick wall tubing, 6.5 feet in diameter. I had troubles at
first with the KX3's cat system, but it is working fine with a work-around
(I use the KX3PA100 as a generic amp). For the past week, I have been
comparing the Midi with my regular antenna, a vertical delta loop with the
apex at 50'. I've only used the Midi on 40 meters so far, where the Midi is
is typically lower than the loop by less than an S-Unit. On receive, they
for the most part, identical. Tom W2CRN
