Tom,

Nigel did an amazing job with his T1 installation, but you might consider a far simpler alternative. Not as well integrated, but it may suffice for your needs.

The T1 board set as normally built -- with the control board mounted in its usual place -- will fit inside the 817's battery compartment. You could mount it to the battery cover with standoffs, and drill holes for the switches and LEDs on the control board. The required cables (RF in/out and control cable) can be routed out of the compartment though a hole, then connected to the FT817's rear-panel antenna and CAT (DIN8) connectors.

The advantage of this configuration is that it minimizes what you have to do to the FT817. The disadvantage is that you have to lift up the rig to see the T1's buttons and LEDs. But that may be a complete non-issue because the T1 stores L-network settings on all bands, and recalls those settings as you change bands on the radio. If you don't plan to change antenna systems very often, this may suffice. There's no need to look at or touch the T1 once it has been configured.
