It's not really necessary, but if done you need to be careful not to let it get into any of the components--a few drops on a piece of lint- free cloth would be better than spraying. I used Multicore 63/37 with "no-clean" flux and the boards came out looking fine without any additional steps. I believe this flux is less active than the regular type, but I had no problem obtaining decent joints.
