Mark,

Mount them vertically on top of the board. If you mount them on the bottom, you will have trouble trimming the leads for one thing. When snugging the wires down, tighten the one where the tinned wire lead comes closest to the edge of the crystal case so it can't make contact.

If you scraped the wire insulation while winding the toroid, rewind it.
That was the problem in those old posts - scraped enamel insulation.
