All I can tell you is that the KX2/KX3 and XG3 will respond to input levels (on the tip) from 3.3 volts up to the maximum RS-232 voltage.  The output (ring) from the XG2 is an FET drain connected to a drain resistor which connects to +9 volts.  I don't know about the KX2 or KX3.
